H.P. Wins Fight With Dell Over 3Par’s Clouds

LAUGHING STOCK / CORBIS

The fight is over. H.P. Wins. The heated battle between H.P. and Dell over the small storage company 3Par ended with H.P.’s last offer of $33 per share. The two tech giants have been leapfrogging each other with bids for weeks, but H.P. has always been favored due to its larger cash reserves.

This acquisition by H.P. gives the company an entry point into the growing cloud computing market. H.P.’s purchase of 3Par also continues a trend by tech companies seeking to diversify and expand their portfolios through acquisitions during the recession.

Trying to Be Optimistic About a Google Music-Streaming System

The Wall Street Journal’s Amir Efrati and Ethan Smith are reporting that Google is working on a consumer-electronics system designed to stream music–and, eventually, maybe video and other media–around the home. Their story doesn’t have much in the way of detail, but does say that Google’s brainchild might be akin to a lower-cost version of Sonos’s excellent-but-pricey music-streaming products. Absent more details, there are several ways to respond to this sketchy bit of news.
