It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s Superman Rethought For Today?

No sooner has the most recent retelling of Superman’s origin been completed – Superman: Secret Origin completed its six issue run last week – than DC Comics unveils the first preview of Superman: Earth One, the even more brand new version of the earliest days of the Man of Steel. DC’s The Source blog today posted pages from the upcoming graphic novel that lets writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Shane Davis reinvent and update the world(s) of Clark Kent, freed from worries about continuity or the greater DC Universe. The result is a younger Superman who, judging from these pages, prefers a hoody to a cape, and feels more than a little directionless.

Superman: Earth One is released next month.

On Tuesday, Obama hosted the second White House Science Fair, an exhibit of more than 30 student projects that ranged from a system to detect nuclear threats to a prosthetic hand to portable disaster shelters. For nearly an hour, Obama toured the displays and visited with students, pressing them for details and admiring their work.

Superman does nothing for me generally but this actually looks a little interesting to me.

    1) Wow. A Metropolis that feels like a real city from the street level, as opposed to a “City of the Future” display at Disneyworld.
    2) I’m glad to see a Clark who is weighing his decision of what to do with his life more heavily.

That’s about all I can say about it from what I see here. From those details alone, it has the possibility to resonate deeper with a modern audience than recent reboots. I did enjoy Secret Origin and love the way it played up his humanity but I don’t know if it made great strides in creating a definitive modern version of the character.

I’m not sure why Superman is so brooding. If they were really going for a realistic Superman “of today” I think he’d be a huge d-bag. He’d be like the jock in high school that’s stronger and faster than everyone else and that everyone hated. Then I think he’d go to wall street for some excitement, because besides Kryptonite the only thing Superman isn’t invulnerable against is the fluctuations in the market.

This looks horrible, like everything else JMS is putting out these days. The guy is tone-deaf, and clearly the editors just let him write whatever he wants. Can’t believe DiDio handed him the reins on two of their big three.
