Photokina must be around the corner.

Building on the momentum of the K-x and K-7 DSLRs, Pentax has just announced the K-r DSLR. The latest entry-level DSLR, however, isn’t an update to the K-x. It’s a bit of mix between Pentax’s entry-level and high-end models with a 3-inch LCD, 720p video recording (25fps) and ISO up to 25600. The 12.4-megapixel shooter promises improved low-light sensitivity, as well as high-speed shooting at 6fps. They’ve even thrown in nighttime HDR mode to go along with a better in-camera HDR mode. A new 11-point SAFOX IX AF system has also been implemented. Two other notable features include IR support and a dual-power source design allowing users to use traditional AA batteries or a rechargeable Li-ion battery.

Having spent a short amount of time with the K-r last week, I can say that it’s definitely a step above the K-x and not quite an entry-level shooter. But it doesn’t have any weather sealing like its big brother the K-7. One of my personal gripes with K-x has been alleviated in the K-r with the inclusion of visible AF points. It seems like a competent DSLR but we we’ll reserve judgment until we’ve had some more time with one.

The K-r will be available in October for $799.95 (body only) in red, black and white. An extra $50 gets you an 18-55mm kit lens. Shell out $900 for an 18-55mm and 50-200mm lenses or $1,000 for an 18-55mm and 55-300mm kit lenses.
