Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Announced

One of the last few surprises that TGS held for fans was the return of a long-dormant offshoot of the popular Tekken fighting games. The reveal of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was a fairly big surprise, one that wasn’t spoiled by the kinds of leaks that preceded, say, the Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection.

Namco’s launched spin-offs from the Tekken series before–most notably, the single-player beat-em-up Death by Degrees, which featured femme fatale Nina Williams–but nothing’s ever matched the success of TTT. The first Tekken Tag was a PS2 launch game in 2000 and helped make the then-new console a mainstay in college dorm rooms all over.

Details are scant on TTT2 but I for one hope that Namco’s got some kind of online co-operative play options in the mix. The only thing better than fighting in crazy martial arts matches against total strangers is doing it with a friend. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will debut in Japanese arcades first, in summer 2011. Arcade releases abroad will follow, as will an eventual console release to follow.
