Zack Snyder Confirmed As Superman Director, Zod Rumored As Villain

It’s official: Zack Snyder will direct the next Superman movie for Warner Bros/DC Entertainment, and he’s already talking about it:

It’s early yet, but I can tell you that what David [Goyer, scriptwriter] and Chris [Nolan, producer] have done with the story so far definitely has given me a great insight into a way to make him feel modern. I’ve always felt he was kind of awesome. I’ll finish Sucker Punch and get right at it.

One of the ways to remind the world that he’s kind of awesome? Bring back the villain from the best of the old movies. /Film is reporting that its sources have confirmed that the villain of the new movie will be General Zod, of Superman II and recent-comic storyline New Krypton fame. There’s been no hint about what the storyline will be for the new movie, but Snyder told Variety that it’s unlikely that Brandon Routh will be returning to the role after 2006′s Superman Returns.

    Terrible choice in my opinion. Watchmen was an awful disapointment and 300 was dumb.

    I have no confidence in Snyder to do a good job, even with Nolan producing.

    what the heck? is hollywood addicted to doing the same thing over and over again? why not pick one of the 100 other super villains from superman comics?

    3 guys who will never be elected president of the United States: Charlie Hitler, Bob Voldemort, and Sam Zod.

    @jeia56

    I actually liked Watchmen and 300 both, but I agree that neither of those movies make him a good fit for Superman.

    It is my personal opinion that Superman is simply not relevant in today’s culture. In the last few years, comics and comic movies have turned more to the dark and gritty. People connect to Spiderman, Iron Man, and Batman because they are fallible.

    Superman is so powerful that nothing can hurt him. He’s a boy scout with no dark side. So, nothing can harm him and he’s emotional stable. In essence…he’s boring.

    Taking Superman and putting him in the Dark Knight universe isn’t going to cut it.

    General Zod? Really? Do we really need to continually revisit the Donner movies for something new? Superman has one of the most impressive rogues’ galleries of any superhero, and you pick Zod?

    How about someone audiences have never seen before, like Brainiac, or Toyman?

    @grekken
    I think Superman is relevant, but you have to make him accessible to modern audiences. Everyone likes a hero-someone to truly inspire us, amidst all of the pain, suffering, and confusion of the modern world. Even a super-powered boy scout could be inspiring, if he shows enough vision, empathy, and most of all, kicks some righteous a**.
