T-Mobile Flicks On Wi-Fi Calling For Android Phones

UMA or Wi-Fi calling is one of the reasons why I’ve been a loyal T-Mobile customer for the past five or six years. And now that unique feature will be extended beyond BlackBerrys (and one Nokia device) to Android devices in the coming months. It will work out of-the-box allowing customers with the new T-Mobile myTouch and Motorola Defy to make calls and send SMS.

It’s been said more than once that the new Wi-Fi calling feature for Android devices will drop calls once you’re out of range of a wireless network, which would be a shame for some but not necessarily a dealbreaker. T-Mobile has been tightlipped about whether or not the G2 or other existing Android devices will receive the update. We’ve put in a request and are awaiting response.

Press release after the jump.
