He may have given up his Spider-Man habit, but that doesn’t mean that Sam Raimi had abandoned a desire to make big blockbuster effects-driven movies: According to Deadline Hollywood, the Evil Dead and Darkman creator has signed up to direct Disney’s Oz: The Great And Powerful. Raimi has been circling the movie, which details how the eponymous Wonderful Wizard arrived in Oz and gained his reputation, since this summer, and his arrival also heralds a new writer being brought on board to rewrite the existing script; Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is now the man responsible for crafting the script that will, it’s hoped, finally get oft-rumored Robert Downey Jr. to join the production in the title role.

Production is expected to begin on the movie next year.
