The value of science dropped slightly today with the news that the creators of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory have been awarded honorary membership in the Royal Canadian Institute for the Advancement of Science, founded in 1849. According to a statement issued by the executive producers of the sitcom, Chuck Lorre received the honor for “groundbreaking fourth grade work in neurology entitled ‘How Smart is the Human Brain? (An Extra-Credit Project),’” with Bill Prady being celebrated for “definitive exploration of zoological ophthalmology in the seventh grade science fair entry, ‘Dissecting a Calf’s Eye.’” Do you get it? Do you get the joke? They’re not scientific geniuses at all, they’re – Oh, you got it after all.
The news comes as the show has gained an amazing 44% audience over its performance last year in Canada. So, all snark aside, maybe it is advancing science, in a weird way.
