Aronofsky Confirmed To Direct Wolverine 2

It’s not been officially announced yet, but Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox is close to signing Darren Aronofsky to direct the second solo Wolverine movie. The site says that the deal is “close enough that discussion has turned to shooting the sound stage portions of the film in New York so the filmmaker and Hugh Jackman don’t have to inconvenience their families,” with a projected start date for filming of March next year. The news comes after months of speculation over who would direct the sequel, with Twilight Saga: Eclipse director David Slade and Red‘s Robert Schwentke both being attached at various times. This will be the second collaboration between Aronofksy and Jackman; they’d previously worked together on The Fountain.

This should be interesting. The Fountain was his most mainstream film to date and it wasn’t big budget blockbuster material, not that it wasn’t good. he just doesn’t make movies with happy endings. Or middles. Or beginnings :) His fascination with physical pain and suffering may add an interesting dimension to the film though.

The Fountain? His most mainstream film? The Wrestler was a lot more mainstream than The Fountain.

I’m curious to see what Aronofsky’s take would be for this film. It seems at odds with his usual work, as I haven’t seen him do anything action-oriented. All of his work is cerebral, artistic, introspective. I like his stuff, I just have a hard time imagining him doing this right. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised …
