Considered the last of the classic English Gothic romance works, Charles Maturin’s Melmoth The Wanderer is a horrific story of a creature (half man, half devil), who exchanged his soul for the wealth of power. Tragically, his regret is too late realized, driving him to frantic attempts at persuading humans to trade places with him. It’s an agonizing read as you find yourself sympathetic for a demon that tries repeatedly to pawn off his misery.
