Best recognized as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic flicks, Rebecca is Daphne du Maurier’s story of a lingering influence of a dead woman over a household, inflated by a devoted housekeeper. Though paranormal activity is entirely absent from the book, the powerful manipulation of villain Mrs. Danvers is near psychotic and enough to make the heroine teeter on insanity. (Note: It’s a perfect first horror read for Jane Austen fans.)
