As a young man, the novel’s titular character Charles Dexter Ward, summons the spirit of a murderous ancestor, but his search for family history goes deathly wrong. If you’ve never read Lovecraft, do yourself a favor and start here. He’s one of the most important horror writers of the last century, and his work is referenced by so many horror writers who came after him.
