The Outer Limits (1963 – 1965)
A Twilight Zone-esque show that wasn’t afraid to be weird, disturbing or pure science fiction, The Outer Limits never enjoyed the success of its predecessor, but you can enjoy it for free on Hulu.

The Addams Family (1964 – 1966)
Based on the famous Charles Addams New Yorker cartoon, watch both seasons of the original mid-60s television series that brought the altogether ooky family on screen for free on Hulu.

Night of the Living Dead (1968)
George Romero’s 1968 classic is the low-budget film that ignited the zombie craze. Watch it for the gags or to study up on what’s considered the origin of classic zombie lore. (It’s the genre’s Dracula.) Watch it free on Hulu.

Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972)
The sequel to 1971’s The Abominable Dr. Phibes, this second go round for the murderous Dr. Phibes (as played by Vincent Prince) will satisfy any campy death-scene filled itch you need scratched. (Think: Death by sandblaster.) There are some major plot holes and a few casting changes, but if you’re a Price fan, this one’s worth watching. Watch it for free on Hulu.

The Crazies (1973)
The original counterpart of this year’s remake, George Romero’s The Crazies focuses on the panic that sweeps through both sides of a government quarantined outbreak. Romero’s classic reactionary-style plot is beyond frightening as a small town falls victim to a virus and the medical professionals dispatched to contain it. Watch it instantly with your Netflix subscription.

The Exorcist (1973)
Arguably one of the most successful horror films of all-time, The Exorcist is a chilling account of demon possession of a child in an unsuspecting D.C. suburb. Its ‘good vs. evil’ roots focus on our fundamental fears; it’s no wonder we’re still scared more than 30 years later. Watch it instantly with your Netflix subscription.

Carrie (1976)
The well-known film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, Carrie is fool-proof entertainment experience. Sissy Spacek shines as the tormented, lonely Carrie who finally exacts her revenge on her high school classmates during, what else, the prom. Watch it instantly with your Netflix subscription.

Phantasm (1979)
This terrifically frightening film by Don Coscarelli is the first of the long-running franchise. The setup is horror perfection: Young boy suspects local mortician of being a freakish, murderous alien from another dimension, and of course, he’s right. Part one is pure horror-meets-sci-fi genius and the story only gets weirder from there. Watch it instantly with your Netflix subscription.

Creepshow (1982)
An ode to 1950s horror comics, Creepshow is the fantastic brainchild of a George Romero/Stephen King collaboration – a collection of shorts created by King (some specifically for the film itself) who also makes his acting debut as a backwoods hick on a ‘gold’ hunt. (And yes, there are zombies.) Watch it instantly with your Netflix subscription.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
The first film of Wes Craven’s 80s teen slasher franchise, Nightmare falls into the undisputed “oldie, but a goody” category of horror flicks. Watch for Robert Englund’s genius performance as the monster Freddy Kruger or to see Johnny Depp sprayed all over a ceiling. Watch it instantly with your Netflix subscription.

Paranormal Activity (2009)
Last year’s sleeper hit garnered big attention as an unexpected box office success. The hidden camera-style footage of ghost activity will make you jump – and question your own sleeping habits. Watch it instantly with your Netflix subscription.
