Hobbit Casting Confirmed

Now that Warner Bros has finally confirmed The Hobbit movie adaptations, and Peter Jackson has finally confirmed that he will, as expected, direct the movies, it’s time for the confirmation of the last everyone-knows-it’s-true bit of information about the much-anticipated fantasy project: Martin Freeman is Bilbo Baggins.

Freeman wasn’t the only name announced for the movie yesterday, however; Richard Armitage, Aidan Turner, Rob Kazinsky, Graham McTavish, John Callen, Stephen Hunter, Mark Hadlow and Peter Hambleton were also named as various dwarves and supporting characters for the two epic movies, continuing Lord of The Rings‘ tendency to place relatively unknown actors at the center of the action. Jackson said of Freeman, “He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave — exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit,” while Armitage – who’ll play Thorin Oakenshield, leader of the Company of Dwarves – was called “one of the most exciting and dynamic actors working on screen today.”

Production is expected to begin on the movies next year, although where is still uncertain, given rumors about the production leaving New Zealand are still circulating.
