Syfy Cancels Caprica, Pulls Show Entirely From Schedule

Syfy has announced that they are not only not renewing Caprica, but they will be removing the remaining episodes from their schedule starting next Tuesday, with the intent to air them at some point in the first part of 2011. While the cancellation of the show isn’t unexpected considering continually falling ratings, pulling the remaining episodes in this way definitely is. Entertainment Weekly has a statement from Syfy’s EVP of Original Programming, Mark Stern, in which he says,

We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for ‘Caprica’ and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series. Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, ‘Caprica’ has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.

Looks like the toasters are toast – at least until the pilot of Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.

I watched the show, but the plot was as slow as molasses. Have something happen!

The series failed to catch on due to mis-casting. The female lead Zoe was just annoying. Her mother on the show was also predictable. Other characters were great but the entire “Zoe caught in an Avatar” should have been limited to two episodes at the most.

I’ll leave the post-op to others but I’m glad the show has finally been put out of its misery. It felt convoluted and boring.

My main hope is that SGU (Stargate Universe) is around for a long time to come. It is one of my current favorite shows.

I thought the cast was strong and the characters (except for Sister Clarice) were strong, they just couldn’t seem to find a coherent story to tell. There were a lot of interesting elements, maybe too many, but they just couldn’t seem to pull it together.

I would guess that, based only on the title, where Caprica was supposed to be a ruminative think piece, Blood and Chrome will be the action adventure crowd pleaser.

The worst part is now we have to wait for the final 5 episodes. At least let us watch them now instead of waiting. I’d think the loyal fans deserve that.

Pulling the series now implies that they have something they think is better to put in its place, but I notice they didn’t say WHAT.

Granted the show had it’s fair share of issues, but who here honestly expects SyFy to replace it with anything better? Their track record is pretty horrible when it comes to replacing actual original programing in the sci-fi vein with complete and utter rubbish.
Yes, I still hold canceling Farscape only to be replaced by Tremors against them.
The show wasn’t helped much by the extended hiatus SyFy’s switching of nights either.

I doubt they know right now. Who knows maybe they are making a series out of the piranha movies or something equally dumb. Or maybe making room for more pro wrestling.

I know its impossible but I wish they could bring back Stargate Atlantis for that timeslot.

I see a lot of people did not like much about the show. Personally I liked it, a lot, and am disappointed in the cancellation. It was the one show I took time out of my schedule to watch. No reason to even turn to the Syfy channel now. Regurgitated bad B sci-fi movies. Crappy shows like Star Gate (insert extension here) and commercials. Looks like I have to go back to HBO or some other service. Meh.

The problem with Caprica and with Stargate Universe (which I want to love and keep watching but just don’t love yet) is that because BSG was so successful with it’s dark interpersonal relationship plotlines they keep trying to recreate it. But for the most part it’s just boring. Give me some exciting action, some quirky or sarcastic characters (Rodney McKay, Jack O’Neill, etc.) give me a new and interesting story line each week please. Sorry the world is dark and relationships difficult enough that I don’t need it on my TV. Really what made SG great was the mixture of interesting ideas, new aliens, great cast chemistry, a little campiness and a bit of seriousness every now and then. I knew when they changed their name to syfy (WTF!) we were in for disappointment. And they delivered.

I agree. It was slow but who pulls a show mid season? I am sick of every show I watch getting pulled. I have no reason to watch SciFi anymore.

  • http://nerdsoftheroundtable.com Chris

The only thing SciFi has left for me is Stargate Universe. I may have to start on Eureka at some point but SciFi is losing me.

Ok, I see no problem with the story. It told us how the cylons got there start and how they became at war with the humans and for reasons understandable. It was slow because they where getting the story out before the war started. Some how people have it in there minds that the reasoning behind the event is irrelevant. To keep it realistic, face it, life isn’t that fast paced. and as far as Zoe goes she was experiencing a very normal child hood and normal child hood problems amplified to the point of being a genius child not taken seriously till it was to late. If people bother to pay attention instead of cry about there being no huge war, the story would make perfect sense to you. I think it is a great show however I am glad its coming to its end cause to keep it going to long would eventually defeat the purpose. Thank you telling us how it all got started syfy I for one appreciate that :)
