Will 2011 Be Too Much For Summer Movies?

Between Green Lantern, X-Men: First Class, Transformers: The Dark Of The Moon, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and countless other genre movies, summer 2011 looks to be filled with high profile genre fare for moviegoers. That sounds like a good thing for the fans, but for the filmmakers, it’s a scary prospect, as Cowboys Vs. Aliens‘ Jon Favreau told the LA Times:

There’s not a weekend where there won’t be teeth on the floor. The audience wins but it’s going to be rough for people making these movies. Then there was the big rush to 3D,  so you have all of these people fighting for a limited number of screens and to get the 3D done, since most of these are hybrids or conversions, so this is a technology that is still in the relatively early stages and there’s going to be a lot of blood pressures going up in the months ahead.

It’s an interesting thought – Warner Bros. has already had to announce that the next Harry Potter movie won’t be released in 3D as originally announced because it wouldn’t be ready in time… What if the crush of big effects-heavy movies is too much for the effects houses to get finished in time? Which movies get priority, and will any of them end up moving dates because they’ll not be finished by their original release dates?
