Ever since reading Harry Potter, I’ve wanted an owl for a pet – but I’ve never considered taking steps to procure one. In India, the illegal owl trade is increasing because of fans who want their own bird to bring them mail and magical messages, TIME.com’s Newsfeed reports. I’m saddened that these majestic creatures have to be subjected to illegal captivity and brutal living conditions.

“Following Harry Potter, there seems to be a strange fascination even among the urban middle classes for presenting their children with owls,” said Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh to the BBC.
