Make Up a Myth and Win the God of War: Ghost of Sparta Bundle

The moment die-hard PSP owners have been waiting for arrives this week when God of War: Ghost of Sparta hit store shelves everywhere. We’ve already talked about the new tweaks that the Ready at Dawn dev studio’s offering in their latest take on the Playstation’s pale-skinned ass-kicker, but now you can get a chance to win the game and the limited edition Ghost of Sparta PSP to boot.

All you need to snag the latest portable GOW and the new red-and-black handheld hardware is pick a Greco-Roman mythological figure that Kratos hasn’t already faced off against and recount how the encounter might go.

Ground rules:

  • Keep it SFW, everybody. We know that Kratos has always managed to find time to bump uglies during his adventures, but Techland is a family-friendly blog.
  • Stick Greco-Roman personas, please. That means no Hawaiian volcano goddesses, no Norse deities in charge of thunder and lightning and no African celestial tricksters. After all… THIS. IS. SPARTA.

So, crack open a copy of Bulfinch’s Mythology and send a burnt offering to the Muses for inspiration. Contest ends on midnight tomorrow night.

Artemis, goddess of the hunt, wilderness and plague (also childbirth, but would leave that out of GoW) she appeared briefly in the first game to hand Kratos a blade forged to slay a titan and never shows up again. I would love to see a game where she wages a war against the people of sparta.

The game would start off with sparta plagued by a mysterious almost supernatural disease. The wildlife inhabiting the country side has become unnaturally aggresive and packs of beasts seem to coordinate vicous attacks against the citizens of sparta.

After they are attacked by Agrius the half-man half-bear gigante they realize that these attacks are the will of an angry god. They decide to perform an ancient ritual that will call a legend back from the dead, the ghost of sparta!

Eventually Kratos will learn that Artemis was absent from this world during the events of GoW 2&3 and her anger over his actions slowly built within her, seeing the polytheism religions dying away, and her fellow olympians forgotten she unleashes her rage upon humanity. Kratos is the only hero capable of stopping Artemis and her army of mythological beasts who wage war against a people who have forgotten the power these beings once held.

The Stygian Witches (aka the Graeae) – For Clash of the Titans fans, they were the three witches sharing one eye who had information that reluctantly aided Perseus in his quest. They were always scary to me because of their look and the way they talked> I think they’d be done well in the game and especially in a battle versus Kratos in God of War.

As always, they have information / key to continue or complete his quest..kratos travels to their cave, but they are stronger than they appear.

The sisters, named Deino (Dread), Enyo (Horror) – who is normally drenched in blood, Pempredo (Alarm) would each have a distinct attack / power but sharing the eye would radiate a combined attach on Kratos. The trick would be that Kratos can only damage the sister holding the eye although the others could still hurt him. Or if he knocked the eye out of their hands with a specific combo, he could attack them all briefly. The sisters would change sizes, possibly teleport and disappear as Kratos tries to defeat them.

Plus, Kratos would have to combat any mini creatures within their cave during the battle.

I think this would be a sweet battle!

At the end of GoW3 we are left with Kratos walking away, fate undetermined. What if his memories somehow came back to haunt him further? Kratos has now been cursed by Mnemosyne (the goddess of remembrance and memory) for his past sins. Being the ruler of memory, only she can pass judgement on whether he lives with a clean conscious or not. As the daughter of Zeus and Gaia, she would definitely be scorned for Kratos’ atrocities. Upon summoning him to her pool in Hades, she tells Kratos that she would have no problem letting him suffer in his own head forever. But says that she can wipe his memory clean of everything, if he can complete her task. Jealousy stricken, Mnemosyne has become a shadow compared to her nine daughters, the muses. Kratos’ task is to kill each one of them for Mnemosyne, so that she can reclaim her glory. Kratos accepts and sets out for his first target. On his journey however he is intercepted by Metis, the mother of his former consort Athena. Metis is the goddess of good council and advice and shows Kratos what evil he will be committing by murdering the muses. Kratos is shocked and torn apart on what to do, so he seeks Phoebe, the goddess of prophecy, who tells him she sees his future and that it is free of any self-destruction. Kratos asks her how he attains it, and Phoebe claims he can kill Mnemosyne herself to make his nightmares disappear. First, he has to kill the spirits in his head that she has planted there. So through Phoebe’s looking glass, Kratos has to enter his own war-torn mind and fight his way to the temple of his memories; guarded by demons such as The Phonoi (spirits of murder, killing, and slaughter), Phobetor (the spirit of nightmares in the form of animals), and Morpheus (the spirit god of dreams who takes shape as humans)
All in all, Kratos kicks the ass of whatever demon, spirit, or god is in his way, and ultimately defeats Mnemosyne and regains his conscious.

The Theban Sphynx would be a safe bet for a brilliant man like Kratos.

The myth says that the Theban Sphynx was an evilly intelligent creature that blocked the entrance to Thebes and asked a riddle of everyone it encountered. Those that failed to answer correctly were killed and eaten in brutal fashion.

Having seen what incredible things the PS3 can handle in terms of large battles, I think a fight between Kratos and this creature would be truly epic. Incorporating another powerful city in the ancient world like Thebes opens up a number of possibilities for other myths.

To begin the fight, Kratos confronts the Sphynx (on the scale of the water horse fight at the opening of God of War III) and is asked an impossible riddle. Kratos responds by cutting out the Sphynx’s tongue and off we go! The fight itself would consist of the Sphynx charging Kratos and the player having to dodge the charge and attack as the Sphynx passes. If timed correctly, Kratos swings up onto the beast’s side and carving away at the legs. The Sphynx gradually slows but deals more damage every time it connects, changing the dynamics of the battle as it progresses.

One way to incorporate this into the story (like a prequel) would be to have the gods send Kratos to Thebes to kill King Oedipus for his incestuous crimes. The Sphynx, defeated by Oedipus in myth, could instead serve as a guard for the city in subjugation to Oedipus. Since the developers have had no problems twisting myth in the past, this could work out.

A battle that would be interesting to see would be that of Kratos versus The Graces. There are debates of course as to whether The Graces are direct daughters of Zeus, but for this series the tale could be woven to tie the blood lineage together.

    *SPOILER*

The with death of Zeus, Aglaia (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer) could exact a plan of revenge toward Kratos. The three of them could plea to a Titan to resurrect Kratos so that they could get the satisfaction of killing the Ghost of Sparta.

Each Grace could have it’s own battle and style. Aglaia could have a seduction type of effect on Kratos (similar to that of the stun/turned to stone effect of the Medusa creatures). Euphrosyne could charm Kratos similarly by throwing explosive gifts which draw Kratos in to the explosions. Finally Thalia could stun Kratos by blowing on her horn which would then summon minions to attack him while immobile.

Of course Kratos would be able to overcome the three Graces seperately, but they would each manage to escape and regroup with a final confrontation between Kratos and all three simultaneously.

I would say the Erymanthian Boar. I have not recall that kratos have face this being at all. Now for the battle. you can say Kratos confronts this boar during on of Kratos works from the gods. When Kratos enters a forest he is confronted by a gigantic boar that is more than 20 times his own size. Now the boar charges first at Kratos. But Kratos is quick and he dodges. The boar hits a tree and it tumbles down. Kratos jumps and swing his mighty blades at the boar but the boar exterior is pwerful and strong so it defelcts Kratos blades. Kratos blades are useless against the boar forcing Kratos to find another way to kill it. The boar Charges at Kratos again this time he doges out of the way again. The boar hit the tree and the beast seem to be dashed by the impact. Now Kratos know what to do. As the boar keep charging and miss in Kratos. The boar hits and knocks down more trees and the more exhasted he is.Kratos then put himself in frount of a stone. he boar charges and misses Kratos and hit the stone head first. The stone shatters but the boar head is craked. Kratos now pick up on of the broken trees and start bashing in to the head of the boar. The boar recovers but Kratos was now onto of the boars head and he star stabbing. The boar screamed in pain and thrash about but Kratos got hold of its brain and he ripped it out. blood and gore burst out of the pigs head. But Kratos wasn’t done. He flip the boar over crake the belle of the boar witha tree and cut out all of its guts just to quench his thirst for blood.
A way to fight this boar in real game play is keep doging the boar.

I would like to see Kratos vs Hercules . Who would win?

Hercules and kratos would fight for hours on end, neither side losing stamina. Hercules would overpower Kratos sending him crashing to the ground. Hercules would go for the kill stab and then kratos would reverse it with his “O” button =)

Eros was the god of love. Eros was the son of the goddess of love-Aphrodite-and the god of war-Ares.

In GOW3, after the Kratos and Aphrodite scene Eros will storm in flying to seek revenge on Kratos for defying his mother and the revenge of his father, Ares.

The battle will take place in Aphrodite’s bedroom. I picture him as cupid so after Krato’s wins the battle (I’ll keep it SFW here) he will obtain cupid’s bow and arrow.

My choice for a greek god to fight is Boreas, God of the North Wind, and winter.

As Kratos makes his way north. He encounters a great purple winged man. He freezes everything around Kratos, except Kratos, because he wants to fight him. They engage in battle. Boreas is riding the north winds and Kratos can’t get at him. You soon find out, as Boreas sweeps close to you while shooting wind at you to slow you down, that there is a piece of wind you can ride on when Boreas gets close to you. You ride that wind and jump. As Boreas swerves to come close to you, you fall down on him and start beating him up with whatever Kratos can pull from oblivion. You soon pull his purple wings off. The next sequence has Boreas grow and move to the front. He starts hurling ice blocks down that stage like tetris and you have to jump on them and make it closer to him, this means that the ice can smash you, so be careful. You get to him and start beating him again. He whites out the room with snow and sends you to the bottom of the falling ice again. It’s the same concept, except more ice, and less time between ice boulders. You go on top of an ice piece. Using all the power Kratos can muster (which is a lot)you pick up the next boulder smashing the ice block you are on, hurl it on Boreas defeating him.

Note that before this boss fight in this area. You will also probably fight his sons and his daughter, the greek goddess of snow, Khione.

Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and madness, would be a very interesting battle. Kratos would stumble upon a grape field, where Dionysus would appear yelling at Kratos to get off his grapes. Kratos would laugh at Dionysus and how pathetic of a god he was, and Dionysus would get angry.
The battle would start with Dionysus sending out grape vines at Kratos to hold him down. The battle starts and you have to shake your analog sticks to break free of the vines.
Throughout the battle, grape vines grow out of the ground, and grab you if you go too close to them. These can be attacked to kill them before they can grab you. Dionysus will walk around the field surrounded by a shield of vines. He will let his shield down momentarily to shoot grape vines at you. During this short period of time, you have to hit him to do damage to him. If you are too close to him when his shield is up, he will run up to you and grab you, and because he is also the god of madness, make you go insane for a brief period of time. During this time, your controls will not work properly and Kratos will often go in the wrong direction.
After you take away half of his health, he yells in rage and starts moving faster, and the time frame to hit him when his shield is down shortens. Every so often, the ground will darken around a large area of the field. Two seconds later, grape vines will pop up at the darkened area, and if you are caught in them, you lose a lot of health.
He collapses in defeat after you take away all of his health, where you finish him with a quick time event(most likely very violent knowing the God of War series).

As we all know by now, Kratos defeated even Gaia, mother and earth. There is not many beings left for him to kill.
    I choose you …. Nemesis

Well, After finally slaughtering all the gods of olympus, the natural forces of the universe itself tries to expel Kratos from existence. Chaos herself sends Nemesis to avenge the fallen, and to finally kill Kratos.

Nemesis is the bringer of fate, she first appears as a giant angel, hair lite flame and burning eyes. She tells Kratos that his fate is upon him, and his is to be dealt his portion of fortune.

Nemesis, having the ability to enter Kratos mind, attack him first using his own memories. To remind him of his sins/faults.

((This would be a boss battle divided into many parts, when Nemesis tries different ways to kill Kratos))

After having overcome the terrible memories of his own family, the leap when he tried to kill himself (and so on) we are faced with remade memories of the ten greatest boss battles Kratos have fought. ((Ten quick-events that acts out the lethal strikes against the most known boss battles, fist hydra, Hades, Gaia…, all with the burning eyes, with the image of the blazing angel in the background/foregound))

Having her spell broken, the great angel appears as a beautiful woman in sorrow, she weeps for the fallen gods, and attacks kratos with her sword.

As Kratos lashes his blades into Nemesis great wings she takes flight. And slowly climbing his way up to the angel, Kratos realize where she is heading….

    to Chaos herself.

I imagine a hard quest to get to find Aceso (goddess of the healing of wounds and the curing of illnesses) after a brutal fight against some of the mentioned above. A long path full of danger will end up in a meeting where Kratos will seek for a cure of his soul will turn into a tremendous combat for survival just to win the rigth to keep on living his tormentuos destiny.
Think it like a pre final level.
    I need this!!!

I would like to see a mega death match – Kratos vs. Demeter, goddess of harvest, sheaths of wheat and cute fury animals.

Enraged by Kratos’ contempt for nature and proper farming techniques Demeter would descend upon Kratos at the end of the summer with a veritable army of squirrels, mere cats and small rodents. Before he had a chance to re-act he would find himself drowning in a sea of fur. Demeter would laugh as she saw the struggling stop from the mound of rodents and begin to turn and walk away. But wait..what’s this. A hand suddenly reached out of the pile of animals clenching a door mouse. The fist clenches and mouse explodes in a shower of blood.

Kratos is free and upon Demeter. His large muscles and very big swords make short work of her sheaths of wheat and although she tries to fire the abundance of the harvest at him through her Cornucopia of plenty she can’t get a shot off in time before Kratos has subdued her and proceeds to bury her head first in the fertile soil of Greece.

Kratos and Dionysus are in a temple, two men from the same father. The wine is flowing freely and Kratos’ glass is always full, no matter how much he drinks. When both men are dizzy with drunkenness, Dionysus reveals his true reason for inviting Kratos – to avenge the death of Zeus. In his drunken range, Dionysus reveals his misguided love for his father. Inebriated, Kratos explains why Zeus had to die for his sins, but his patience wears thin.

Both men drunk, Dionysus lunges at Kratos; both men hit the ground – and thus begins a drunken brawl. Kratos swaggers to his feet, reaches for a wine bottle, breaks it off on a stone column, and stabs Dionysus through the eye. Dionysus wails in drunken agony, and kratos grabs Dionysus and pounds on the mouth of the wine bottle, driving the broken glass deeper into Dionysus’ face. Pound, pound, pound, pound, pound – blood flowing as freely as wine from the bottle protruding from Dionysus. As the broken glass breaks through to the back of Dionysus’ head, he goes limp. Kratos, again victorious, stumbles from the bar, covered in blood and wine.

No match for the god of war, a quick and fitting end to the arrogant god of wine.

Kratos is on his quest to forget all the horrible memories behind him so he decides to go visit Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. Unknown to Kratos, the river is located in a dark cave that belongs to Hypnos, the god of sleep.

While wandering through the cave to find the river, Kratos falls asleep and is attacked by Hypnos in his dreams. Kratos, not knowing he is dreaming, attacks Hypnos but after a long and brutal battle, Hypnos seems to be in perfect health no matter how much Kratos keeps on fighting. After notching this and other subtle clues in his environment that don’t make any sense, Kratos finally realizes he is in a dream and wakes up. Kratos runs through the cave in anger as he tries to get his revenge on Hypnos and finally finds him. In classic God of War style, he completely destroys Hypnos and dares any of the gods to mess with him again. In the end, he decides against drinking from the river since that would also erase the good memories he had. He wanders out of the cave and continues to seek relief from the nightmares of his past.

I would like to see kratos inserted into the Oedipus saga.

The game would start with kratos being wrongfully accused of murder from Oedipus for the death of the previous king Laius. When Kratos fights back the gods apollo and artemis are called down to defend the city of thebes and cast out the creator of the plague. Once that has happened he would be approached by tiresius the prophet and told he has to find the two shepards who know the secret of the murder, who just so happen to be held by the two gods. His journey would take him to corinth the city of oedipus’s childhood, where kratos would be the cause of the death of the king and quenn. Once the shepards have revieled the secret he would journey back to thebes to bring Oedipus to justice and to rid the city of plague.
They could bring new creatures specific to the two gods such as griffins, werewolves, and scorpions. And they could bring in new heros such as Orion, adamanta, and many others associated with the two gods. This fits perfectly with the tragedy of the other games as he commits further attrocities and leaves two cities without rulers, to further his own agenda.

Remembering his past as he defeated Aries and became the “God of War”. Kratos remembered a battle that he had been a part of. The battle was the legendary battle against the Trojan army. All the while this war was raging on the soldiers did not praise him for his help in defeating the Trojan army, they instead looked to their leader Achilles. Oh for one battle he longed for was to claim his right as the force that helped the Spartan army to crush the Trojans. He pleads the gods to give him the fight to defend his honor. Seeing as how Achilles had powers given to him by his mother Thetis Kratos agrees to give up some but not all of his godlike powers. The gods quickly whisk Kratos away to the time before the Spartan army assembled to wage war on Troy. The battle ensues on the war torn beaches of Troy. Thetis fearing for Achilles weakness breaths life into the Trojan Horse. Kratos must battle tooth and nail to defeat this monstrosity but eventually defeats the monster in the end. Achilles picks up his blade and is met with a roar fueling Kratos’s rage even more than before and he attacks Achilles with a fury that even stunned the gods. They battle until Kratos finds Achilles weak spot and exploits it and kills Achilles. The Spartans are horrified at the sight of their fallen leader and look to Kratos for guidance. He leads the Spartan army to victory over the Trojan army and goes down in history as the man who defeated an army and a legend in one day.

In an alternate reality where Kratos was more closely aligned to Hephaestus then Athena. Due to this version of him being both a crafter and a warrior.

Hephaestus the god of the crafting arts requested Kratos two tasks. One was to find his wife and second was to bring various metals, minerals, and parts from various rare beasts spread throughout the land. Naturally on his journey he would make enemies of various gods, beast, and demigods.

A god that was hated and disliked by others Hephaestus had his wife kidnapped by unknown forces. He wanted Kratos to search the lands for what had happened to her and would grant Kratos weapons of unimaginable power if he was able to return his wife and well as bring him the rare items required to make them.

The game would start by fighting humans and working your way up to legendary beasts such as the Erymanthian Boar and his first Minotaur.

Hephaestus had stopped working in his forge for centuries and although he was a god his injuries from early on made it difficult to go on a journey. For the quest he give Kratos a weapon that cannot harm the living and another that would be able to trap a god.

Naturally he would fight against Artemis and not defeat her, but injure her fellow huntresses enough that they would flee.
He would discover that Ares kidnapped Hephaestus’s wife.
Kratos would find and then fight Ares one on one in their first fight where the goal is merely to draw against him and rescue her.
Finally Hephaestus to test out his new weapons against him with the aid of this Cyclop companions.

The game would end with him forging new weapons from those he defeated.

Somnus, the god of sleep, would be a mighty foe for Kratos. Lulling the god of war into a state of hibernation, Somnus would seek to keep Kratos in that state with the temptation of wine, women and even a family that no longer exists amongst the living.

While within this dream state, Kratos would soon realize that his “reality” is merely a falsification woven by the crafty god, and he would soon seek revenge for toying with his mind. The final showdown between the two would see Somnus strike at Kratos with the Mighty Pillow of Ultimate Softness, and his Yawning Sheep would temporarily daze Kratos.

Upon Somnus’ defeat, Kratos would be outfitted with a special type of wooly armor. Lower-tier minions would lie on the ground and fall asleep if they dare touch the fluffy outfit, granting Kratos an easy time agaist such pitiful enemies.
