Telethons no more: Non-profits around the world are working to raise AIDS awareness via social media.

Silent For A Cause:

The Digital Life Sacrifice campaign, lead by singer Alicia Keys, is raising money for the Keep A Child Alive fund, which provides support to people affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. To raise finances, celebrities have pledged their Internet silence on all social media outlets until funds hit $1 million. Internet-active celebrities Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Ellen DeGeneres, and Ryan Seacrest have all logged off until the goal is reached.

UNAIDS:
The United Nations AIDS Program is using the hashtag, #PreventionRevolution to raise World AIDS Day awareness via Twitter.

(RED):
This year AIDS-focused organization (RED) is using Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Meetup, Flickr, YouTube and Eventful to create a map that tracks AIDS awareness activity worldwide. They’ve also teamed up with Starbucks, who will donate 5 cents to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa for each view of The Killers’ music video Boots, directed by filmmaker Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre).
