In about two months from its release date, the latest installment of the Call of Duty video game series will make $1 billion in sales worldwide, according to an Activision press release sent out today. The game was went on sale on November 9, 2010 and made an whopping $650 million in the first five days after it hit shelves. Over 600 million hours have been spent playing the game, with the average player logging on more than once a day and more than one hour each time.  Avatar was the only other entertainment title to reach the $1 billion landmark in a similar short period of time, said CEO of Activision Blizzard Bobby Kotick.

“This is a tribute to the global appeal of the Call of Duty franchise, the exceptional talent at Treyarch and the hundreds of extraordinary people across our many Call of Duty studios including Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer that work tirelessly on the franchise,” he said in the press release. “Our ability to provide the most compelling, immersive  entertainment experience, and enhance it with regular, recurring content that delivers hundreds of hours of audience value, has allowed Call of Duty to continue to set sales and usage records.”

Kotick added that he believes the game is so successful because of the loyalty of Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer gamers who, in his opinion, make up the “most engaged online communities.”
