Twitter Moves To Eradicate All Non-Twitter Twitter Sites

2011 might be the year when Twitter stops being nice and starts being real… Or real litigious, at least. Following September’s request from the company that social community “Twitter Moms” change their name so as to avoid any trademark infringement, Ad Age checked in to find out whether this was the start of a new pro-active regime, only to get a somewhat unclear answer.

According to spokesman Matt Cohler, Twitter Moms (Soon to become Social Moms) was asked to change its name because “[t]o an average person, there could be confusion” between the two without the name change. He went on to explain, “that’s why TweetDeck is TweetDeck and not TwitterDeck.” But although Twitter is very clear about its trademark policy concerning names (“Don’t: Use Twitter in the name of your website or application”), there are many other sites that include “twitter” in their URL. When asked whether TwitterJobs, TheTwitterGuys or Twitterific had received similar requests to rebrand, Cohler declined to comment. Can we take that as a yes, perhaps…?
