There’s a lot of music online–more than most people have time to keep up with. That’s why you’ve got us. Every week, we’ll point you toward three excellent new songs from chart-topping stars, cult favorites and unknown geniuses, and show you where you can find them as free downloads or videos.

1. The terrific Swedish electronic pop band jj has just released a free ten-song mixtape of misty, creepy tunes, Kills, available via the site of their label Sincerely Yours. And if you thought you could get away from Kanye West by downloading a Swedish electronic pop band’s new music, think again: “Boom” and “High End” both incorporate samples from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

2. Brooklyn’s psychedelic electro-rock quintet Yeasayer have ended the year by releasing a downloadable 13-song live set, Live at Ancienne Belgique, on their own site. It’s available on a pay-what-you-wish basis–anywhere from free to ten bucks–in a variety of digital formats.

3. The legendary Bikini Kill/Le Tigre/Julie Ruin frontwoman Kathleen Hanna was the person who coined the phrase “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” A couple of weeks ago, she performed Nirvana’s song on stage–backed up by pianist Kenny Mellman of Kiki & Herb fame–and told the story of its title’s genesis, and what happened after that. If you have ever cared about either Nirvana or Bikini Kill, or for that matter ’90s feminism, you do not want to miss this.
