Skype Launches Free Video Chat App For iPhone, iPad

Trust Skype to come through where Apple fails: While the iPhone’s own FaceTime only works on WiFi, Skype today releases an updated app that will let iPhone users video chat on both WiFi and AT&T’s 3G network.

The app will also allow iPad and iPod Touch users to receive video calls, with those using the latest iPod Touch being able to make video calls as well (Skype says that video calls can be made with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation with i0S 4.0 or above, and received on the iPod touch 3rd generation and iPad). The only catch is that video calls will have to be with other Skype users, whether on their Apple devices and using the new app, or those using Skype on their computers, so it’s probably a good thing that the company has worked out why their network failed last week.

The free app is available for download now.
