The Three Songs You Need to Download This Week

There’s a lot of music online–more than most people have time to keep up with. That’s why you’ve got us. Every week, we’ll point you toward three excellent new downloads or videos from chart-topping stars, cult favorites and unknown geniuses.

1. R.E.M.’s” Collapse Into Now” album isn’t due out until March, but they’ve been starting to release songs from it by various channels. First came the radiant electric drone-rocker “Discoverer”; the most recent is “Oh My Heart,” a subtler midtempo track with hints of vintage Southern soul, which has just appeared as a lyric video on their official YouTube channel.

2. The legendary Olympia, Washington indie-pop label K Records now has its own Tumblr, where they’re posting songs from their catalogue (and forthcoming releases) every day and, in their words, “exploding the teenage underground into passionate revolt against the corporate ogre.” A good place to start exploding: “One Small Step,” a dreamy, throbbing number from Lake’s Giving & Receiving album, which is due out in April.

3. “My House,” the new video by the New York retro-dance group Hercules & Love Affair (from their forthcoming Blue Songs album), is a tribute to the house music scene of the late ’80s, and some of the things that went along with it: eye-searing fashions, inappropriate sunglasses, and ultra-low-budget public-access cable TV shows shot on reused videotape. This may be the only music video ever made where the song itself stops for a (hilarious) commercial break.
