Angry Birds Ousted From Top App Spot By Eighth Grader

Look out, Angry Birds, there’s a new addictive app in town. But it wasn’t made by another app developing company–Bubble Ball was designed by fourteen-year-old Robert Nay, with only a little help from mom.

Bubble Ball is a classic physics game that requires players to place metal and wooden planks strategically so that when a ball is released, it will ricochet to the finish line. Since the game debuted on December 29, its popularity has exploded. So far, Bubble Ball boasts over 1.5 million downloads. And last week, the game catapulted to the #1 spot in the app store’s top free games list, ousting the wildly popular Angry Birds from its throne.

Nay, who made his first website in third grade, experimented with a few different programs and programming languages before settling on creating the game in Ansca Mobile’s Corona, a software developer’s kit, and learning Lua, the programming language it uses. By the time he completed the app, Nay had written over 4,000 lines of code.

So what’s next for the budding programmer? Nay told ABC that he’s got another app in the works.

Not bad for a kid who hasn’t even gotten to high school yet.
