Say what you like about People Magazine, a lot of people like it. In fact, almost a million have “Liked” it on Facebook, making it likely that the magazine will be the first magazine brand to pass the million Like mark on the networking site. Forbes points out that the celebrity magazine is, at 967,000 Likes, way ahead of its nearest rival, Us Weekly (398,000 Likes), and demonstrates the success of the company’s social media efforts. A spokesperson for the magazine explains,

People has made Facebook a true extension of the weekly magazine as well as PEOPLE.com. We post each week’s cover, the latest headlines with enticing prompts a few times a day and offer fans additional content and sweepstake opportunities on our fan tab.

The success of People is being pointed to as proof that the magazine has significant presence amongst the advertiser-favorite young demographic – older-skewing magazines like In Touch and Star Magazine have less than 10,000 likes between them – and suggests that Facebook may be the next frontier for print brands trying to prove that they’re still relevant in the digital world. Well, it makes a change from launching an iPad app.
