Redbox Announces Plans To Become The New Netflix. Is Amazon Involved?

Redbox isn’t just content with fighting with Netflix over DVD rentals – now it wants to have it out with digital distribution, as well. The company announced yesterday that it will launch a monthly subscription-based service that will allow users to watch Video-on-Demand movies on multiple devices as well as granting them disc access through the physical kiosks… In other words, pretty close to the Netflix model.

The news was confirmed by company president Mitch Lowe during a meeting with analysts. The company had previously said that it would launch a digital service with a partner, but the partner has not been identified yet (Some predict that the partner may end up being Amazon, as part of that company’s plan to dethrone Netflix).

Neither Lowe nor any other company spokesman has given a projected start date for the new service.
