Sony: Exclusive Games Out, Exclusive Content In

It’s all about the exclusives when it comes to video games, Sony’s senior brand manager for MLB 11: The Show Scott McCarthy argued. However, it’s not games that Sony wants to acquire in order to gain a larger audience. Now, it’s all about the exclusive content.

“When you make a title exclusive, you limit its promotional power; we don’t want to do that,” he said to Scrawl. “We want games to be as big as possible — it’s great for the industry. However, we want to make sure that you play it on the best system possible, so we like to take parts of games and make them exclusive to the PlayStation system.”

Umm wait a minute. What about your title releases coming up like Killzone 3Uncharted 3 and inFAMOUS, which are only some of the 20 exclusive games you announced for 2011. It seems the platform, famous for marketing console packages with their exclusive games like Metal Gear Solid 4, is retracting on their previous policy.

The good side about exclusive content being pushed is that you don’t have to buy two different consoles in order to play the games you want and, theoretically, you can get two different gaming experiences since you can get extra levels and varied characters on the different platforms. The bad side? You’ve got to buy two versions of each game if you’re a completist and want to try what the other team has to offer, which means much more expense on your part. How do you feel about exclusive content over exclusive games?
