Those affected by the recent storms in the South may want to check out the Global Alert Networks hands-free mobile alerts app. Available for Android and BlackBerry phones, the app runs in the background and uses your phone’s GPS chip to determine if you’re within range of severe weather. If so, it’ll send you an audio message that gets automatically downloaded to your phone and played over its speaker.

According to the Global Alert Networks site:

“Global Alert Network alerts are automatically delivered to subscribers via their mobile phone by sending audio alerts that automatically play without the subscriber having to interact, touch or even look at the phone…

…When an alert is created, the alert zone is downloaded to the phone and the phone makes the determination if you are affected by the alert and whether the alert should be played.”

Aside from severe weather alerts, the app can relay nearby traffic information as well. You can download the app here.
