GameStop Appears to Be Building a Streaming Gaming Platform for Android

It’s been a busy week in the world of on-demand entertainment. YouTube’s reported plan to unveil a video on-demand service was stunted by a few fussy movie studios who refused to license their material, and even Netflix looks like they’re moving away from maintaining physical inventories. Earlier this month, GameStop made a few key acquisitions indicating they’re funneling resources in the same direction: Impulse, a Steam-like digital distribution platform that’s kind of like iTunes for games, and Spawn Labs, a company that engineers streaming technology for video games.

But Digital Trends (via Yahoo News and Joystiq) is reporting that a recently spotted Linked In job posting is seeking a software engineer with Android experience, clearly laying out the gaming retailer’s strategy to move into the on-demand mobile space.

The posting states: “The Sr. Software Engineer will be responsible for the development and maintenance of our Player software on Android tablets and smartphones. The ideal candidate will have several years of experience in application development in Android or iOS applications.”

According to data collected by PopCap Mobile Gaming Research back in January, gamers comprise 33.6 percent of all mobile phone owners, so the move into mobile should come as no surprise. However, Digital Trends points that that in order to build a successful streaming platform, they’ll need to figure out a way to build a community that users will feel compelled to repeatedly engage (something current market leader OnLive has struggled to do).
