Jaguar Partners with RIM, Does Itself a Disservice

Remember the Jaguar C-X75 we wrote about a few days ago, the ultra-sleek supercar of the not-so-distant future? While we geeked out over the dual low-emission engines and feathery carbon-fiber body, we couldn’t help but imagine a futuristic dashboard of corollary cool.

So imagine the collective sad trombone we heard in our heads when we got wind that Jaguar will be partnering with RIM to develop (in their words) “the latest generation of integrated mobile phone and in-vehicle infotainment systems. They began demo-ing the partnership at BlackBerry World 2011 earlier this month using a new smartphone integration system called Connect and View.

The system will have a button layout similar to the BlackBerry’s softbutton interface and require a USB connection for everything short of streaming music (handled via BlueTooth). The system will have the ability to “lock out” distracting apps while giving drivers access to their phone’s info through the dash. As for unrolling the technology publicly, we’re talking as early as 2012.

But, then again, we probably lost you at “infotainment.”
