Apple Starts Using iPads to Sell iPads

We all know how Apple likes to “Think Different”, but its latest thinking is more different than usual.

Over the weekend, the company rolled out something called Apple Store 2.0, which sounds like it’s going to be something special. Turns out it’s iPads. Everywhere.

Next time you stroll into your local Apple store, you’ll see special info iPads next to every product on sale. Even next to the iPads.

These iPads, mounted on see-through plastic stands, are there to offer basic product advice, comparisons between different models, prices, and suggestions for upgrades and accessories. If you need a human being to help with more, there’s a button to press that will summon one for you.

Pressing the home button on these special iPads does nothing. They’re locked down for their particular job. If you want to play Angry Birds, use one of the other iPads.

The move comes as Apple quietly celebrates 10 years of running its own retail store network.

The iPad kiosks replace simple card displays that used to be on hand to give you basic information. The iPads are a little more flexible, it’s true. But might they not distract people from the product they intended to look at in the first place?

Maybe not. Apple’s very good at selling shiny. A little extra shiny next to main shiny probably won’t make much difference.
