The latest trailer for Epic Games’ hotly-anticipated Gears of War 3 hit the media today and the clip promises an explosive and emotional end to the interspecies war that threatens to destroy the planet of Sera.

Epic’s already released a taste of what the multiplayer portion of Gears 3 will play like, with a month-long beta that just ended, but the new trailer offers the first glimpse of the storyline that will wrap up the Gears trilogy.

The square-jawed scientist at the beginning of the trailer gets identified as the father of lead character Marcus Fenix, a man long thought dead. Knowledgeable Gears fans will remember that Marcus was tried and jailed for deserting the battlefield in an effort to rescue his dad. If that’s his dad and if he’s alive, Marcus will likely do whatever he can to save him.

Meanwhile, the enemies in Gears 3 look fiercer, faster and tougher than ever. You see several sequences with the new Lambent enemies: members of the subterranean Locust species mutated by the radioactive Emulsion element. Other human COG characters show up, too, but it remains to be seen as to whether they’re friend or foe.

We’ll all getting some more light shed on what to expect at E3 and players everywhere will get to experience the Xbox 360 exclusive when it hits on September 20th.
