Well This Is Interesting: Walmart Drops iPhone 4 Price to $147

Something strange is afoot.

Right before an Apple event that normally announces a new iPhone, yet this year is supposedly NOT being used to announce a new iPhone, Walmart has dropped the price of the iPhone 4 down to $147. If I had a full beard, I’d be stroking it right now and saying, “Hmmm.”

This is the e-mail I just got from Walmart’s PR company:

“Hi Doug,

Walmart today announced a price reduction on the iPhone 4 which will be available for $147 today, June 6 through June 30 at select stores.

These savings apply to both the AT&T and Verizon versions of the iPhone 4 in both black and white colors. Pricing requires a new two-year wireless and data agreement or qualified upgrade.

Please let us know if you are interested in covering this announcement. We look forward to hearing from you!

Best,

Claire”

Hmmm, indeed. And consider this my interest in covering this announcement. The best to you as well, Claire, whoever you are—wherever you are. Hmmm.

Walmart’s website doesn’t reflect the new pricing yet, but all version of the iPhone 4 are listed as out of stock and still carry the $197 price tag.

This may signal an all-new iPhone announcement today or perhaps the announcement of a spec-bumped iPhone 4S that’s been rumored. Or it could be Walmart rolling back prices across the country or whatever it is they do in the commercials where that yellow smiley face crashes into all the pricing signs and generally wreaks havoc on high prices.
