I know the future is upon us, but there’s still something about facial recognition that creeps me out. Especially when it suggests those not-so-flattering photos of me accurately…
Soon, Facebook will be able to scan all photos posted to Facebook and suggest people to tag based on their facial features.
And though Facebook’s facial recognition will soon be widespread, the feature isn’t new: It’s been rolled out to a test group. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to opt out of the service, and Lifehacker has put together a few simple instructions on how to do it.
Built straight into the privacy settings (click your “Account” link), users should go to a link that says “Customize Settings.” Under the section “Things others share,” there’s an option labeled “Suggest photos of me to friends.”
Disable this feature, and Facebook will no longer suggest you as tag-able when your friends get a little too photo happy. However, it doesn’t stop them from tagging you altogether – they can still do it manually.
Of course, on the flip side, you could just hide all tagged photos from your friends automatically if you’re really concerned about those photos showing up and make it easy on yourself.
To do that, go to Account > Privacy Settings > Customize settings > “Photos and videos you’re tagged in” > Customize > Only Me. Voilà.
And people say Facebook’s privacy settings are complicated…
