Did you watch the Women’s World Cup final yesterday? It was thrilling. And guess how many tweets per second were being bandied about Twitter? A record-breaking 7,196—also thrilling from a more nerdacious perspective.

Even crazier is that another soccer game—Paraguay vs. Brazil—almost broke the record again on the same day, but ultimately fell short with 7,166 tweets per second. Just 31 more tweets and they’d have won the Twitter Cup… ah, what could have been.

Twitter just turned five years old. How many tweets were sent on July 15, 2006? Just 224. The entire day. “Today, users send that many Tweets in less than a tenth of a second,” says Twitter.
