Here’s a novel way to ensure that porn spammers don’t create websites based around your products: Own all of the pervy variant domain names yourself. That seems to be the logic behind a recent complaint that ended with Apple taking ownership of seven iPhone-related domains, four of which are clearly not safe for work from their names alone.
Apple initially filed a complaint with World Intellectual Property Forum last month over seven domains–iphone4s.com, iphonecamforce.com, iphonecam4s.com, iphoneporn4s.com, iphonesex4s.com, iphonexxxforce.com and porn4iphones.com–that forwarded to a porn site when visited on a mobile device. Before the complaint could escalate further, the owner–believed to be an Israeli company whose identity is protected by whois privacy–agreed to turn the domain names over to Apple.
Although the domains were officially transferred to Apple’s ownership yesterday, they still forward mobile users to the porn site, something that the company might want to get on top of before folks start accusing the company of having a secret porn agenda. It’ll be interesting to see which if any of the domains Apple ends up repurposing. iphone4s.com seems an obvious choice–so obvious I can’t believe that they didn’t already own it–but I can see iphonecam4s.com being rehabilitated, as well.
As for the others? Well, we’ll probably have to wait for the introduction of the long-awaited “Apple Store After Dark” before those see any use, I suspect.
