Awww: Real Lizard Licks Virtual Ants Off a Smartphone Screen

I wonder how long it took the first iPhone user to say, “Hey, maybe I should use this thing to take a video of my cat!” How far we’ve come. Now we take videos with our smartphones of our pets playing with our other smartphones. Exotic pets, too! Not just cats!

Which leads us to this video of a bearded dragon catching its “prey” on a glossy touchscreen–in this case, ersatz ants from the 99-cent app Ant Crusher.

Like the video of a cat trying to catch virtual mice on an iPad, this is funny both because the animal is inherently adorable and because watching the animal’s futile actions accesses the same sadistic pleasure center that’s responsible for trick birthday candles and America’s Funniest Home Videos.

Not to anthropomorphize here, but the lizard does seem to give its owner a sad look between every empty bite. One day, one of these lizards will taunt some hapless rube with iPad representations of Whoppers and Nacho Cheese Doritos, and we’ll know that justice has been served.
