The Tweet Smarter blog has released a chart of 2011’s most popular subjects in terms of how many tweets they produced per second, and the leader by a wide margin is the December 13 Japanese television screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s animated movie Castle in the Sky, which resulted in a staggering 25,088 tweets per second. By contrast, the second most popular Twitter event was this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, which produced 8,868 tweets per second on August 28. Suddenly the Royal Wedding, which only managed 3,966 tweets per second on April 29, seems like a minor event in the grand scheme of 2011. Clearly, they should’ve waited until more people were awake and tweeting in the U.S.
