Twitter is bringing promoted tweets to the timelines of those of us using the company’s official iPhone and Android apps. Until now, you may have noticed promoted tweets in the trends and search sections of those apps, and in your timeline when accessing Twitter’s mobile site.

A post on Twitter’s blog says that promoted tweets will begin showing up in the apps’ timelines “in the coming weeks,” and that, “Initially, a small number of users may see Promoted Tweets near the top of their timelines from brands they already follow.”

The news is sugar-coated somewhat with quips such as, “This will help ensure that people see important Tweets from the brands they care about” and “We strive to create products that put users first, and continue to enrich your Twitter experience. Today’s news represents another important step in our advertising efforts, and we hope you like it.”

The reality is that plenty of people probably won’t like seeing promoted tweets in their timelines while using Twitter’s mobile apps but, hey, that’s how Twitter stays “free” to use.
