Yup, It’s Official: Apple iPad Event on March 7

I believe that Rene Ritchie of iMore was the first Apple blogger to report that Apple would launch the iPad 3 at an event on March 7th. When The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple agreed, I believed it. Now it’s a done deal, period: Apple has invited journalists to an event on that date at 10am PT at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center, one of its favorite spots for product announcements. (It’s where the original iPad was unveiled in January 2010.)

The company is famous for being coy–or downright uncommunicative–about the purpose of these events, but recently it’s been it least a little less mysterious. The invitation for the March 7th event shows someone touching an iPad–one that’s so closely cropped that you can’t tell what iPad it might be–and the tagline “We have something you really have to see. And touch.” If this isn’t the launch of the new iPad, it’ll be be very, very surprising.

It’ll be nearly as startling if said iPad doesn’t have a super-high-resolution “retina” display. Many folks are also expecting it to sport a zippy quad-core processor. Some of the scuttlebutt says that it’ll also have an LTE 4G wireless broadband connection. And with any luck, it’ll also feature at least one interesting twist which nobody’s predicted just yet.

I’ll be in the audience at Yerba Buena, and will liveblog the news as it happens right here on TIME.com, with Techland’s Doug Aamoth as cohost. Join us then, won’t you?
