What does Samsung’s next generation of Galaxy tablets offer that Apple’s new “resolutionary” iPad doesn’t? A little money left in your bank account.

The biggest selling point for both versions of the new Galaxy Tab 2 is the price: $250 for the 7-inch tablet available April 22 and $400 for the 10.1-inch version available May 13.

At that price, Samsung has positioned the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 as a serious competitor to Amazon’s Kindle Fire. For $5o more, you get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a microSD card slot and 50 GB of free Dropbox storage for a year.

The specs, which have been out for awhile now, are not particularly exciting. Both the 7-inch and 10.1-inch tablets sport a 1 GHz dual-core processor and front and back cameras; the 10.1-inch version features 16GB of internal memory while the 7-inch version features 8GB. Still, for someone looking for a viable alternative to the Kindle Fire, it’s not a bad option.

Samsung has also been pushing the Galaxy Tab 2’s IR port which — with the Smart Remote app — lets you turn your tablet into a fancy universal remote, complete with an attractive, searchable interface that pretty much eliminates channel surfing. You can pre-order the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 starting on April 12 and the 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 2 on May 4.
