Buy: LG Viper from Amazon for 1 cent with two-year contract from Sprint
Buy: LG Optimus Elite from Amazon for $150
I just had a fatherly figure neighbor over to my house to talk about cell phones. He doesn’t currently own one. No feature phone. No smartphone. No nothing. And he’s not alone. A lot of dads of a certain age (old enough to be my father…) either don’t have a smartphone at all or don’t have one that really meets their specific needs. But the last thing you want to do is saddle him with a handset that he can’t figure out or a phone that forces him to spend a small fortune every month. So when you get a phone as a gift, think about what he needs it for.
My neighbor Bill wants a smartphone to reach his family in case of an emergency, check emails every once and awhile, and take pictures and video without having to carry extra gadgets. He and I sat at my kitchen table and looked over a total of 10 different phones that I’ve reviewed over the past year, from super-simple feature phones to the smartest smartphones on the market today. After all was said and done, two LG models really stood out: the LG Viper, for being eco-friendly and environmentally conscious, easy to use, and taking superior video; and the LG Optimus Elite, because it’s a no-contract Android powerhouse that won’t cost him an arm and a leg.
