Windows 1.0: The Windows 8 of Its Time

The Verge takes a look back at Microsoft's first graphical interface, and draws some parallels to its new one.

I keep saying that the closest parallel Windows 8 has in tech history is nothing less than Windows 1.0 itself — a product which had its share of issues and wasn’t a blockbuster, yet turned out to matter a great deal. So I love Sean Hollister’s Windows 1.0 retrospective over at the Verge:

Then as now, companies seemed happy enough with what they had, and worried about how Windows might have a fragmented user experience if software manufacturers don’t follow standards. Then as now, critics suggested that users would really want extra hardware (then, a mouse; now, a touchscreen) in order to get the most out of the operating system. 27 years later, Windows 8 has the challenge of selling Live Tiles and touchscreens to people who don’t necessarily need them to stay competitive. Then, Microsoft promised that Windows sales would be a “slow burn.” We may be there again.

I have been using it for 4 month now, I never use the RT side and the windows side is clunky and it freezes constantly (AMD 6 core 2.8, with 8 gig of mem and Nvidia 550gtx, so it is not the hardware) I am going back to win 7

Last time it took eight years to get from Windows 1.0 to the successful Windows 3. I don't think Microsoft has eight years.

I argue .. the title should be Windows 8: The Windows 1.0 of its timeThis is because Windows 1.0 came out when Apple's LISA was far ahead of it in GUI but it took Apple's products by storm and spread everywhere. Now when the touch computing is getting popular and Apple is far ahead of Microsoft, Windows 8 whas come with touch interface and hopefully it'll blow away Apple's IPad ..

For me windows 8 is the best windows ever. It boots and shutdowns extremely fast. Its more responsive and stable that ever. I hated the ugly start menu. The metro is just like in android where you put your frequently used apps.

The comparison does not hold. Windows 1.0 did not work. Windows 8 works beautifully. The first useable version of Windows was 3.0.

The start button is unnecessary. It's amazing people keep bitching about it. If you want to find something type the name and it comes right up. The Search function in Windows 8 is extraordinarily powerful.

Windows wasn't Really Usable until Windows 3.1 - so I think I will WAIT until at LEAST 8.1 when they put the START  Button Back.

@Slvrgun  Yup, for those that like typing, I happen to like the mouse, Windows 8 file explorer sucks the big one, it freezes constantly, search is only accurate if you know the exact words MS uses.

@starboyone  you'll be sorely disappointed to hear that the start button will never officially appear in Windows 8, they have put a lot of effort into removing it, and providing a great alternative.  Who trots around through their classic start menu anyway? Don't tell me you do, why can't you just type what you want then press enter like everyone else?  That's the direction Windows is going, so get with the program or go have a ball will Linux or mac and do things the slow way.
