The News About Surface Pro Battery Life Isn’t Good

The "Pro" version of Microsoft's tablet will have half the battery life of the lower-end version.

I said that Microsoft hadn’t disclosed battery life estimates for its upcoming Surface for Windows 8 Pro tablet. Wrong! ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley reports:

Surface Pros are going to get about half the battery life of the Surface RTs. Surface RTs get between eight and ten hours of battery life, based on various estimates I’ve seen (and my own personal experience on mine).

This isn’t stunning: Surface Pro uses a powerful Intel processor rather than the ARM chip in Surface RT, and runs a more demanding version of Windows. But it’s still a telling example of an area in which Microsoft’s “no compromises” philosophy results in a downside which sounds like a compromise to me.
