It's all about what you want on your phone. The iPhone's iOS is simplistic and works amazingly well, while Android's many operating systems all work differently. An iPhone is perfect for my cousin, who only needs Facebook and Instagram, and doesn't want to worry about anything else on the phone. One can pick up an iPhone, no matter what age, and start using it with ease.

On most Android operating systems, you will find a more advanced experience with more customization abilities: Things you can only get on the iPhone via jailbreaking. These features include live wallpapers, icon customization, different launchers, actual widgets (unlike the "widgets" on the iPhone), and much more.

There are misconceptions and stereotypes about iPhones and Androids. Some true, some false. Android fans may say that Apple fans are rich and pay too much, while the Apple fans claim they pay for a premium. There are true and false parts of both sides of the argument. Here's where both statements are false: iPhones (depending on the memory size) can cost the same as an Android phone. So you aren't really paying more for an iPhone. However, there are also quality Android phones. Many HTC phones are made top-quality, and are just as "premium" as an iPhone. Here's what's true: iPhone buyers can indeed pay too much. Having more memory on the iPhone is expensive. On most Android phones, you can expand the memory with microSD cards for a much cheaper price. Another misconception about Android is that its operating system isn't developed. Android has gone a long way, and has changed a lot over the years. iOS has stayed mostly the same. The only major change to iOS was the addition of the pulldown menu, which was on Android for a long time already.

I have owned an HTC Evo, iPhone 4S, and a Samsung Galaxy S III. I have used them all for a long time, and have found Android's operating system to be my preference. I liked iOS, but it was a little boring for me. I wanted more customization. I wanted it to be my phone. But that doesn't mean Android is better. Neither is better. They're completely different, and each has its own unique experience.

if you have multiple apple products, U know what Im talkin about. Its the experience. SS is just a gadget. iPhone is a 360 degree experience. We will definitely find out in the long run. And one more thing is the software. Nobody can come close to it.

I'm a consistent Apple user (I have two iPhone 5's in the house, an iPhone 4S, two iPhone 4's (one GSM and one CDMA), an Apple TV (2nd generation, jailbroken), New iPad (3rd generation Cellular+WiFI) but I can honestly say this year, iPhone 5 should not have won gadget of the year, yes we got the 4-inch display we have been longing for a long with other upgrades like 4G LTE and a new connector but I truly believe that award belongs to the Samsung Galaxy S III or Galaxy Note II, both pushing the envelope in terms of innovation.

It's not that the iPhone is not pushing the envelope anymore, it's just that the user interface is starting to show it's age, I use to praise Apple for it's consistency throughout all their devices but as a whole, now in 2013, it's really starting to show it's age and a lot of the things I thought I would love in the 5, I found I can make do with the 4S.

My family have 3 Samsungs Galaxy that t-mobile was giving away just for switching carriers. They have been a nightmare from day 1. From all the Krapp I've had to endure with this junk my favorite is this one. I tried to make a call and I received a message saying something like: Unable to start application, try again later. R U kidding. It's a phone that cannot make phone calls!! What if that was the call I made trying to save someones life? I had an iphone 1st gen before and something I can remember about it was its reliability. I understand the Iphone 5 is a lot better so, next March we will say bye-bye to T-mobile and their ridiculous phones. No more Samsungs (and Droids) for me and my family. Not even for free. Probably getting 3 Ip5

Apple’s better than other phone’s I think. The phone is really easier better to navigate. I recommend the iPhone strongly. Apple makes it good by: 1. iCloud(im not going to explain it but you can go to apple.com to see what it is.) 2. Apple TV(you can take music, videos, games, photos, anything from any Apple device (even iMAC!) ) 3. the iphone and all apple products (me and my family all have some sort of apple products, we have 2 ipod touches 3 iphones, getting a ipad, and were probably gonna get another iphone.

Apple keeps their focus on suing (patent infringement) Samsung, HTC and LG on to try and stop their advancements instead of focusing on their own advancements in technology it very clear on the iPhone 5.  If that is what Time magazine calls advancement in technology they both need to wake up. I have bought Apple products over the years and was happy in the beginning but now realize what overpriced junk they are, and will change once they all die which is going to be soon I hope.  Palm was the first smart phone with a touch screen not the iPhone!  Steve Jobs is not around to see or stop it, but Apple will slowly start to fail and history will repeat itself like what happened to Apple in the 80's.  Who reads Time magazine anymore?  That magazine will soon be out of print so why does anyone care what they think!

LOL, Apples products are a gigantic joke. I was at the office today streaming the Canada/Russia world junior game on my PlayBook. I watched as 10 people swarmed my desk because their iPads (with it's lack of a flashplayer) couldn't stream the game. It got to the point that it was too difficult for everyone to see, so i plugged my Playbook into my monitor using it's native HDMI out (another feature the iPad doesn't have). Apple is a legendary marketing company, and Apple users are uneducated consumers who have been sold over, and over, and over again. You want the best notebook in the world? You buy a Lenovo. The best tablet? BlackBerry PlayBook. The best smartphone? currently, The Sony Xperia T but soon to be the BlackBerry 10 devices. See article to know what I'm on about. If you are an Apple iSheep (i.e. you waited in line for the iPhone 5, you've got a slippery macbook pro & iPad) than you have had the wool pulled over your eyes by your own lack of ability to do proper due diligence before you purchase.

I have to work on a mac sometimes during the day. It has to be this to protect my sanity. i would have to put a bullet in some randoms head daily if my only choice was a bill gates nightmare box. As i use it for creative design i appreciate how brilliant apple are at combining what i need (a stable software platform) with what can only ever be described as the sexiest product design. BAR NONE. It doesnt matter whether its a desktop computer, mobile computer or phone they nail it every time. Why cant any other brands do this. In comparison anything else always leaves me slightly cold.

Yeah you claim the such and such or the what about this one is better but i couldn't care less. Theres nothing on yours that makes me think oh yeah i wish my apple would do that. Everything you claim is better on yours isnt down to your respective manufacturer, they really owe it all to google for building the platform for them. And then your 'manufacturer' STILL cant nail the product design.

The only thing i'll give you is if my new iphone5s battery life is poor like a few rumours speculate. But even then i still couldnt care less.. i have a charger by my bed, a socket in the car and plenty of electric at work. If it runs out of battery for a short period of time.. hey ho i still couldnt care. Why... because theres much more important shit in life than mobile phones.

FAIR TRADE ON APPLE PRODUCTS, NOW !!!

I love the iphone haters. You all could have a motorola brick phone and think its hot rice. I cant believe android was even talked about. Nothing but security loopholes on their operating system. And samsung! wow, nothing but clunk junk made by 12 year chinese kids. Apple is on a quality and sexiness level that will take years to surpass. When apple releases their new design im sure all the makers will be copying them again especially when the re-revolutionize the TV in the coming year.

"But when it comes to melding hardware, software and services so tightly that the seams fade away, Apple still has no peer"

By this reasoning, then every subsequent year's release of the iPhone will be TIme Mgazine's Gadget (of Mobile Device) of the Year for that particular year.... Sorry, Samsung, ur next Galaxy S4 has already lost out to the iPhone 6....

anyone mention anything about that you can not use many features of content or services on iPhone 5 (which worked fine on iPhone 4) due to issues with battery life. To date, tested a number of phones, can not get over 3.5 hrs usage time.

PeterSchwartz
PeterSchwartz

Yes, this article is bias to Apple  Yes there are better phones on the market.  The journalist acknowledges this in the last few lines of the article and he also sums up why he felt it was the best - the melding of hardware, software and services.  If you'd rather not have this, go ahead and buy an Android phone.

"There are lots of nifty smartphones out there, including the iPhone’s impressive archrival, Samsung’s Galaxy S III. But when it comes to melding hardware, software and services so tightly that the seams fade away, Apple still has no peer."

More importantly, have a safe, prosperous and merry christmas.

@wwellwwellwwell  well said. this perspective is the one we should ALL have towards the whole 'android vs iOS' thing. i hate it when people blindly side with one or the other and cannot allow themselves to see the merits of one or the other or the faults of one or the other. the truth is, they are both great. I like the iPhone because i feel it is simple and clean when i first got an android it felt messy and confusing to me but i am enjoying the customisation and the greater diversity it has. i think ill stick with iPhone though, i like the interface.

jmjacquinot

@maniallu I agree with all of apple's products, software and the fact that no one is near as advenced as any of their products are you can't go wrong. Its the total experience. If you have apple you dont have to worry about buying new gadgets to get things done, more than likely apple thought of that WAY before you did and it's already built into your device!

@justinreyesv yea, iphone rocks but the 5 wasent really an exciting upgrade from 4s, it was a dissapointment to me, if i could go back in time i would keep my cash and stick with my 4S,

jmjacquinot
jmjacquinot

@justinreyesv The thing is while they may be showing age, other devices still cant handle what their products can. You may get tired of it, go buy a droid, buy the 3rd phone you have replaced the first with, the money you spent to replace them, then still have a device that does not do what you need when you want it to without lagging, you will come back. Apple products just work. No nonsense, and no need to be a programmer to keep it running for the first half of your entire two year contract.

@volleyplay36 If you think Apple is the only one on the offensive in the patent wars, you're woefully ignorant - EVERYBODY is suing EVERYBODY. Apple just gets a lot of heat for it because the fanatic anti-Apple crusaders see them as the evil empire who wants to destroy innovation.

Yes, Apple has been very successful in the patent wars - but only against Samsung. Want to know why? Because there are actual documents from inside Samsung that prove that their goal in making phones was without question to make something that looked and felt as much like an iPhone as possible, to cash in on the market and image that Apple had created. Against every other company, Apple has had only as much success as any other big player - they just settled with HTC, which sort of throws a wrench in to the "APPLE IS EVIL" conspiracy theory that people bite in to.

Sorry you don't like Apple products. That's your call. But don't pretend that they're going to stop being popular anytime soon. Because the societal consensus is that they ARE great products, and people will continue to buy them in droves.

SeanMoser

@volleyplay36 MAYBE... the iPhone and Apple rule, and all the other products brands (no offense Microsoft, just try to bad mouth Apple(remember the first Samsung Galaxy S3 commercial? I don’t remember Apple doing attack ads, I remember support. Apple rules, that’s all.

JeremyCaron

I love "Apple users are uneducated" interesting because you have any idea the top market for apple is.. its not the uneducated its the doctors, businessmen, and educated consumers who want the product to work. BB has alot more to handle then just a os.. every phone up to date has been crap.. they have tried touch screens and failed. if you want a keyboard which very few do they were your option. its a little to late for a come back. i dont like andoid because in the past the os was crap. rebooting my phone 2-3 times a day im sure jelly bean is much better and if i wanted to by a phone today id prob look at the HTC DNA as that phone looks awesome.. but before calling someone uneducated id suggest getting educated about the situation!

@marco.i.grimaldi

All those iPads will out live your device by years and at that time no one will be using flash anymore. And I'm sure as I was when I was a Apple hater like you, ignorant in Apple products, because you can use HDMI with any iPad. And most game streaming I know of isn't in flash anymore even now. If I was at your work I could have showed everyone how to watch it on their iPads, not that I believe this story to be true anyway.

@marco.i.grimaldi I hope that your boss doesn't read this post or those 10 people might get fired! I am at least twice as productive since I switched back to Apple products after years of Windows. Whoah, I better go. Reminders (both on my phone and iMac) are telling me that I have an appointment in 15 minutes.

kvndugan
kvndugan

@marco.i.grimaldi Oh god, are BlackBerry people still trying to pretend that the PlayBook is better than the iPad? With its dead ecosystem and crappy screen?

Lenovo makes the best notebook? SONY makes the best phone?! Jesus, for someone yelling about "sheep" getting the wool pulled over their eyes, you're pretty damn blinded by your own hatred of Apple.

StevenEggleston
StevenEggleston

@marco.i.grimaldi Interesting you should mention Flash, because Adobe have stopped Flash development on mobile devices. And Apple rejected it in the first instance because it was slow, buggy, and a resource hog. Wake up to the future that is HTML 5.

And the best notebooks are Lenovo? You must be joking. Lenovos are junk and have some of the worst support in the notebook industry. Just try being a repair centre and getting parts for their consumer models. You've got 3 month lead times because they don't know their arses from their elbows. Not to mention the DOA rate on them is taking the proverbial.

Heck, even their ThinkPad ranges (previously brilliant when they were manufactured by IBM), are complete jokes. You're severely misinformed and stating the BlackBerry 10 is soon to be the best smartphone just summarises this. I think you hate Apple so much that you've pulled the wool over your own eyes, by settling for mediocrity every time and not giving Apple any credit for any devices.

Well, well, well -- the iHaters and corporate trolls (ANYTHING NOT APPLE) are up early today and hard at work. Well, good for you and enjoy your assortment of faux products. I'll go with the INNOVATOR, and not the IMITATOR, every time. So, Blackberry 10 is finally going to get it right and pass Apple by? Yeah, right. The iPhone was announced by Steve Jobs in January 2007. Since then, various Blackberry iPhone copycat models went down in flames for a poor user experience rightly accompanied by lack of sales. We shall see, iHater.

Well, I'm still in the 1st half of my last contract renewal with the 4S and apple told me that I have to purchase a new phone to fix my problem. My phone will not work in wifi mode, its completely grayed out. I found forums completely dedicated to this problem on the Apple support website, yet when I spoke to the Genius guys they feigned like they never heard of the issue. It was as if they were "coached up". The best they could offer was to purchase a new phone for $199 before my eligibility date. I would have preferred that they treat it like recall and fix or replace my phone at their cost since it was not my doing that created the problem but theirs after the upgrade.
