With iTunes 11.01 Update, Apple Fixes Several Serious Issues [Updated]

There’s a new iTunes 11 update on the block — call it iTunes 11.01, because Apple does — that fixes a bunch of stuff definitely in need of fixing, including at least one thing I complained about in an earlier piece.

Like: An issue where searching larger libraries caused big-time pausing when you started typing in the search field. When I type anything in that field now after installing the update, with my library of over 40,000 songs, the response is instantaneous, just as it was in prior versions of iTunes. Thanks Apple, you definitely listened!

The update also fixes:

- An issue where new iCloud purchases might not have appeared in your library with iTunes Match enabled.

- A glitch that causes the AirPlay button to occasionally not appear.

And it adds back something I’m still not clear on why Apple removed: the ability to display duplicate items. I missed this in my complainer piece, because I don’t have dupes, but it came up several times in responses to my story in the comments and on Twitter. I suspect Apple just made a significant swathe of its iTunes base very, very happy again.

[Update: Apple just reached out to let me know that, despite its not being listed in the 11.01 release notes, the company has in fact fixed the PNG conversion issue for album art, which is huge news, from my standpoint -- I just ran a test with an album that was using a 143KB JPG file, and the image embeds unconverted, remaining exactly the same size it was pre-embed. Big kudos to Apple for fixing this.]

They just deleted the "Add Folder to Library".  This is the feature you use to get the program to recognize music on external drives.  Once I burn a CD into iTunes I always move it to an external drive and back it up on a second hard drive.  Now there is no way to tell the iTunes player where the new music files are.  It was there yesterday, but when I added more songs today, it was gone.  It would sure be nice if they put it back.

That's all fine and dandy but am I correct in that I can no longer search my iPod for music?

conversion to lower kbps is causing problems with synchronization...

Love to see the issues being resolved but can't believe when I select "genres" that I no longer have the ability

to view the list of artists in the column browser as before.  This makes it much more difficult for both my wife and I to enjoy

our different Christmas artists...

All artists in genre can no longer be separated....hope this gets restores as I find it now weaker in terms of its prior flexibility.

DJs and multitaskers really need multiple windows!

Still bummed about the column browser! I loved my 2 columns of artists & albums. When you have 400+ artists, you want to be able to scroll down quickly. The row across the top of the "songs" tab is not practical for me. Also, it seems that I cannot adjust the height of it anymore! I can only see 2 artists at a time. (Using a PC). Anyone having this issue now? And I will complain w/ others about the album artwork of the selected item. I'd be ok w/ the smaller-than-a-postage-stamp artwork at the top if there was still the selected item artwork option available. (why get rid of it????)

Sorry, iTunes D.J. one of the best features of iTunes 10 is still missing.

Without it, I've uninstalled 11 and reinstalled 10.7 and it'll stay that way until Apple does something about that, regardless of how many times they ask me to update it and ignore my requests not to be asked again!

In the first release, song playcounts would not update if the crossfader was enabled...  this version fixes that.  My smart playlists are all set up to remove songs that have just been played and put a new song on.   They stopped working like that and drove me nuts until I read on the chat boards about disabling crossfader to fix it.  Just downloaded the new version and tested it with crossfader on and it is working correctly again.

After further testing playcount problems persist with crossfader enabled...  seems to work some of the time, but not all of the time.  Had to disable crossfader again just to make sure my playlists update correctly...  arggggh!  Also not liking that you can no longer open two separate windows in iTunes ...at least I can't figure out how..  For example, sometimes I like to have my music library open in one window and the iTunes Store in another so I can see both at the same time., etc..  (yes I am a PC user).

Unless they bring back Artist Grid iTunes 11 will remain a piace of crap.

I think maybe it has to stay PNGs so iTunes can match the album art?

@MarkReyes It turns out Apple actually fixed it and just didn't mention it in the release notes!

Now Playing Window is still missing .... all that singles artwork inbetween album tracks are now left unnoticed since it's on a small small window at the upper top bar.
