The Xbox One Keeps Getting More Expensive

The official sticker price of the Xbox One is $500, but be prepared to spend a lot more if you want the best experience.

Just like Sony’s PlayStation 4, the Xbox One includes a single wireless controller. As Microsoft revealed over the weekend, additional Xbox One controllers will cost $60–same as the PS4. That’s where the similarities end.

Whereas the PlayStation 4 controller has a built-in rechargeable battery, the Xbox One controller runs on AA batteries out of the box. If you don’t want battery life to get in the way of your play time on the Xbox One, you must purchase a $25 Play and Charge kit, which includes a rechargeable battery pack and charging cable. Either that, or you can keep your controller tethered to the console via a micro USB connection at all times. This connection will power the controller, but it won’t charge your batteries.

Should you decide to buy a second controller, you can get a bundle with the Play and Charge kit for $75. The grand total, then, is $600 for the console and two controllers with rechargeable batteries.

It gets worse: If you’re into online gaming, you might want a headset to chat with friends. That’s another $25 with Microsoft’s console. Add that to the cost of the two controllers and charge kits, and now you’re up to $625. And you still haven’t bought any games yet.

Let’s compare that to Sony’s PlayStation 4: One controller is included. Each controller has its own battery pack, which can be charged with any micro USB cable. You can buy a couple of 10-foot cables on Amazon for about $3. The PS4 also includes a wired headset. Put it all together, and you’re at about $466 for a console, two controllers and a headset. Should you decide to tack on Sony’s PlayStation 4 Camera, that brings the total to $526–still far less expensive than the Xbox One with similar accessories.

One more thing, confirmed last month and reiterated by Sony this week: If you want to use apps like Netflix, chat with friends or partake in free-to-play games on the PS4, there’s no additional cost. On the Xbox One, all of those services require a $60 per year Xbox Live subscription. Sony only requires a subscription for online multiplayer, and at $50 per year, it’s $10 cheaper than Microsoft’s online service.

None of these things automatically make the PlayStation 4 a better console than the Xbox One. Having played with both consoles at E3, I found myself more intrigued by Microsoft’s exclusive games, its television plans and the next version of Kinect. I’m not making any final judgments on quality until both consoles are on the market.

Still, as the extra costs of an Xbox One add up, it’s become increasingly clear that the PlayStation 4 is a better value.

This entire tactic of "you need to spend your hard earned money to pick a next gen gaming console side quick" marketing is ridiculous. Casquette Huf

Is there seriously anyone on this comment thread who would make that kind of investment in today's economy? Casquette NBA

Well if something costs more than another similar product, then clearly the more expensive one is terrible...
I'm not a Microsoft fanboy, I have both 360 and PS3, and I plan on getting both of the new systems eventually. This "article" just annoys me.

Wow! There's people who still use the bog standard headsets for game consoles? Get with the times and get a proper headset such as a Turtle Beach! Also, PSN is set to be MORE than XBL (both of which you can buy online for $30 anyway!)

@markatkins67 Alright, have fun waiting for third party headset support, because neither are in at launch. Oh and TB is overrated.

FreddyLundekvam

@JasonLitzau @markatkins67  Makes no sense... The headsets can be hooked up to the TV or the console, regardless of type and kind. It's the ports that matters. My Turtle Beach X42 work fine on the 360, TV, One and PS4.

The headset in itself suck tho! Replaced twice in 6 months.

It's always been the case that the Sony console is pretty good out of the box but the MS consoles need lots of additional stuff to get the same functionality.

Time has finally delved into the realms of tabloid news. To be honest, I am struggling to see how these factors you have highlighted will be an issue with anyone that is willing to, or can afford to pay for them at launch if not already payed for by pre-order.

I think  in the end it will come down to what exclusive titles are available, personal preference and ultimately fanboyism.

Microsoft confirmed XBox 360 support for the next three years.  So why does anyone need to buy either of the next gen consoles right out of the gate?  Wait until prices come down, like they always do, and the value is there for both consoles.  This entire tactic of "you need to spend your hard earned money to pick a next gen gaming console side quick" marketing is ridiculous.  The changes in the new consoles are nice, but not drastic enough to cause anyone with any tech chops to think these are must-have devices.

Also - you have to pay a fee to play used games on xbone

By the way, I chatted with somebody at Gamestop the other day and they said ps3 is sticking around and having development for another year.  If you stick with ps3, all the games people turn in when they buy ps4 will end up in the bins in the stores, so you will get some great deals.

Yeah thats funny haha. Iphone was 800 dollars on a 4G network on contract. Or 500 dollars roughly for a handset.? But we are in a recession. But it sold? Hmm.

Also fifa legends is only xbox 1. Gamers will be swayed by features. Not just hardware. Take it into consideration.

Remove the article. Or update. Headset now included. Uk preorders get fifa. Plus x1 has a week early cod, bf4. If you are a big gamer these are facts to consider. Just saying.

machesterunited7

This is incorrect information. The headset is included in the price and the Xbox one now comes with a game included in the Uk. Plus what is wrong with a set of rechargeable batteries?

Wow, this is the first time I've stumbled upon a flock of Microsoft supporters online.  I guess this can be explained with Time's readership being comprised of mainly Americans.

I feel most people do not comprehend that the author of this article was more forgiving of X1 than most other articles writing about this console war.  His only statement that reflected his opinion was the last sentence and yet, many readers are chastising him for voicing his opinion.  He felt that the superior line-up of games for X1 and the added value of Kinect failed to justify Microsoft's higher price for the system.  How difficult is that to understand?

Now, I have also observed much misinformation disseminated in the comment section regarding the performance and power of these consoles.  PS4 defeats X1 in almost every category, including memory (GPPR5 for PS4 vs GPPR3 for X1), CPU (Single-chip x86 AMD "Jaguar" processor, 8 cores for PS4 vs 8 core AMD custom CPU), hard drive (removeable for PS4, not for X1), internet connection (X1 REQUIRES you to be online at least once a day!).

Sony was deficient in their Live experience due to its free status for PS3 (though it was impressive for a free service), and they have adopted a system similar to Xbox Live to accumulate the capital to improve it yet they still charge $10 less per year.  Furthermore, they do NOT force you to buy a membership to access features outside the realm of gaming, such as netflix, hulu, etc.  Microsoft will continue to impose its will on your access to these unrelated apps if you are not a Live Gold member.

Sony has not imposed draconian restrictions preventing you from sharing your games with any friend you wish.  X1 has strict control by only allowing you to  loan out a game for 30 days to a very select few of your friends.  Another result from these new regulations eliminates the possibility of selling your used game to store outlets.

The polls have reflected resounding popularity for PS4 along with their early pre-order sell out at Gamestop and other retailers.  Beyond the borders of USA, PS4 will outsell the X1 by a large margin.  I only hope more Americans will no longer willingly obscure their vision with national pride and comfort of knowing they are purchasing from an American company over a Japanese one, despite Microsoft's inferior product.  And for those claiming it's "only" $100, I think you fail to realize it's a RECESSION.

how is a next gen console still requiring AA batteries lol. stick a lithium battery in there xbox. don't make a controller bigger and heavier just to bleed another $25 from your costumers. and headset wise.  you can use any mic headset or a blutooth with the ps4. xbox once again proprietary port.

malkillbasdain
malkillbasdain

you can't math Mr. Jared Newman. And you don't need a headset to game on the Xbox One....the Kinect has a highly sensitive/intelligent array of microphones built in.

Not sure what your sony bias is about. Just another writer with no journalistic integrity.

Bobbo8

@malkillbasdain obviously you didn't read the whole article. In no way shape or form is he biased towards the xbox. He even stated that he was more intrigued by the xbox. you may not need a headset, but i'm sure it will be similar to kinect in which you have to sit 2 feet away from the console to use the speakers and microphone. He also stated if you're into online gaming you "might" want to pick up a headset. How is his math wrong at all?

Whenever people speak about the Xbox One there are negative reports, comments and such. Speak on Playstationt there's high praise as if they do stuff right or made a big change to the future of console gaming by FINALLY having game chat. Both are cool conaoles but not mind blowing feets toward gaming futures.

"If you don’t want battery life to get in the way of your play time on the Xbox One, you must purchase a $25 Play and Charge kit"

You don''t HAVE to buy a Play and Charge kit, most people these days have a stanard AA battery charger in the house already, I bought 2 in a sale for £5 each both came with 4 AA batteries each and they've been powering my 360, wireless mouse and keyboard etc. after nearly a whole generation the first 4 batteries have become too weak but still work fine in the keyboard.

I prefer rechargable AAs over battery packs any day, I've always got fresh recharged batteries sitting in the charger on the wall socket for when mine or a friends batteries die and in e unlikely event that I've forgotten to put them on charge I'm free to use regular AA batteries until they're charged.

"One more thing, confirmed last month and reiterated by Sony this week: If you want to use apps like Netflix, chat with friends or partake in free-to-play games on the PS4, there’s no additional cost. On the Xbox One, all of those services require a $60 per year Xbox Live subscription."

That was the case with the 360 but I haven't seen it stated for the X1 yet, in any case there are pros and cons but it seems that you're only interested in the negatives, I'm looking forward to unlimited free cloud storage which doesn't require a gold account

Everyone knows the people who buy the PS4 or Xbox 1 on day one is the core enthusiasts audience. Both Sony & MS are capitalizing on that in their own way.

if $100 is going to put that big of a hurting in your pocket, maybe you should opt-out of the 'next gen' console until the price drops.

iPhone is more expensive then any other smart phone on the market, and more restricted then any other with arguably less features, but it is the TOTAL PACKAGE that makes it the #1 smart phone on the market.

Same goes for Xbox. It's the total package. Sony is just to play games. Xbox does that just as well + so much more.

batman8318
batman8318

@RickyFitz I agree 100%! I am one of those wait until they come out with a glitch free slimmed downed better version kind of guy...lol We all know they will have problems and they will come out with a streamlined tweaked out better version so....I say its a safe bet to save a little money and wait. In the process the wait will allow more time for games to hit the shelves because lets face it there is not going to be a lot of titles at launch. In fact most of the better games announced at E3 don't even come out till on in to 2014!

Jordan_Blair
Jordan_Blair

Mr. Newman,

Simply because something is less expensive does not automatically mean it  "is a better value", it simply means it is less expensive. Value is based on the difference between monetary worth and the gross benefits provided to the user. You yourself stated that, based on your brief experience, that you preferred the Xbox One over the PS4. This would mean that the Xbox One has a higher value for you.

As a side note: You've neglected to mention, as many people already have in the comments, that Sony is selling the majority of PS4 peripherals separately. This is why the box price of the PS4 is cheaper than the box price of the Xbox One.

Instead of looking at any of this or doing any research, you've decided to write a biased article with a title designed to grab attention through cheap shock value. You're writing for TIME, not some obscure blog, so until you can write like a professional I'd ask that you take a coloring book and go sit in the corner quietly.

Best Regards

@Jordan_Blair Your reply was really, really crappy, and you clearly failed to understand anything the author was talking about.

Bobbo8

@Jordan_Blair you realize he included the camera peripheral into the sum of the playstation and it still wound up cheaper with re-chargable controllers (2) and a headset.

Really?  Grasping for straws much?  By the way, have you seen the PS4's "headset"?  It's a monopiece iPhone bud!  It's laughable, just like article.

Seriously, why do they continue to allow children to write for Time magazine?

rwwarwick1
rwwarwick1

what a joke of an article.  Either the guy has a complete bias OR he is just an idiot.  Why is it only the "Xbox keeps getting more expensive"?  With the PS4 also announcing $60 controllers, didn't the PS4 also "get more expensive"???

And when you add in everything.....the DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 2 IS STILL $100!

sheesh....do your homework.

thismachinekillsfascists25

did sony pay this writer ?...ps4 $400    second control $60 sony move $80  sony eye $60  so if you want the full ps4 experience you will pay $600 and that before you buy even one game  ..if you get a xboxone just  charge the  batteries  with a cheap $10  kit  you can charge like 10 batteries  at once with a cheap kit also the kinect 2.0 that comes with the xboxone is said to be worth more than a ps3 control the sony move  and the sony eye combined

jakester726
jakester726

as long as your going for that full experience thing you were talking about you minght want to include the playstation move controller as another 60 bucks oh and the one xbox one controller that comes in box yeah thats a rechargeable too so uhh you dont need to buy the second controller so after adjustment thats makes it xbox-$565 and PS4 $586?so yeah just want to keep the facts true heres two sites you can double check that:)

@mrbomb13 "What an absurd pricing model!  A $500-minimum for a video game console?!

Is there seriously anyone on this comment thread who would make that kind of investment in today's economy?

$500 could coverage multiple trips to the gas station, grocery bills, utility bills, some of a rent check, etc..

Seriously, I thought videogames were for the child/teen/college kid demographics.  If an adult spends $500 on a kid's toy in today's world, he should get a CAT scan."

_________________________________________

Actually this is cheap. Shouldn've seen the PS3's higher GB versions when it came up going up around 700$ dollars before you buy anything for it. And that was all the way back in 2006. So 500$ dollars now for a way more powerful, initiative system is fair by all means. And your stereotyping of "Video games are only for little kids", is one of the stupidist things I've ever heard. A lot of games on the market are for people 17+, and the biggest audience that buys these games are people 20-35, if uoi haven't noticed, video game consoles are aimed towards adults, but they cater to younger players needs too. You, are the one who needs a CAT-scan done. But atleast be proud you won something, stupidest comment of the year award.

jakester726
jakester726

lol a kids toy? since when? yes theres alot of younger teens flooding games but most games are aimed for young to older adult (hence the M ratings) so saying i need a cat scan because im an adult that is buying a console? really thats a comment id expect from a kid come on bud im dumbfounded by that comment
