Lost Your Ride in Grand Theft Auto V? Rockstar Says a Fix Is Incoming

In the meantime, don't drive other characters' cars.

If you’re ailing from disappearing-vehicle-itis — a condition known to afflict those who’ve pimped their means of transport in Grand Theft Auto V, parked the upgraded auto in a garage, walked off, then returned to find the garage inexplicably vacant — it’s not some clever Easter egg feature involving in-game gremlins and obnoxious joyrides in the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Ferrari Star Wars vein.

Nope, it’s a bona fide bug, though one Rockstar’s already copped to and promised to fix. The company posted an update to its support site on Sunday acknowledging the malfunctioning car-garage issue. In the game, you can save vehicles you’ve appropriated — and more importantly, spent money on to upgrade — by parking them in garages. Rockstar says the error occurs “particularly after upgrading and then completing a mission,” and notes there’s currently no way to recover a car if it’s gone missing. That’s right, Rockstar used the word “currently,” implying there may be a way to get those vehicles back at some point — may being the operative word here.

In the weekend update to the document, Rockstar appended the following wrinkle:

This issue may occur if you drive another character’s personal vehicle. We are looking into a fix to prevent this from occurring in the future … In the meantime, please try to avoid parking a car in a garage, driving one already in a garage, or getting in a default vehicle, when playing as a character other than the one with your upgrades.

In other words, friends don’t let friends drive their jacked up rides, at least not until the gods of Los Santos decree it safe once more to do so. If you want to know when that’ll be, Rockstar advises you “log into the Support Site and click Subscribe” to receive email updates.

Since auto theft is rampant in the GTA universe (hence the name), perhaps the cars were stolen?
