Voice of Siri Reveals Herself — And Why the iPhone “Assistant” Sounds So Snippy

"When I first discovered that was my voice, to be honest it was a little creepy."

Millions of people have spoken with Apple’s Siri, but until now no one knew that her real name is Susan Bennett. No one still knows that for sure, and Apple won’t confirm it, but CNN found audio forensic experts that back up the Atlanta-based voice actress’s claims.

On top of her identity, Bennett also revealed one reason why Siri sounds so snippy:

“There are some people that just can read hour upon hour upon hour, and it’s not a problem. For me, I get extremely bored … So I just take breaks. That’s one of the reasons why Siri might sometimes sound like she has a bit of an attitude. Those sounds might have been recorded the last 15 minutes of those four hours.”

Bennett often records dialogue without any idea of where it will be used. “When I first discovered that was my voice,” she said, “to be honest it was a little creepy.” That’s because while Bennet is used to greeting people seeking out help from companies like Delta Airlines, she never expected to have her voice actually interacting with strangers.

According to Siri, today is her birthday, Oct. 4. I'd like to ask Susan if her birthday is today, because mine is today as well. When I told Siri that today was my birthday she did 2 bars of 'happy birthday' and then stopped and said it was copyrighted. Siri has a sense of humor!

I am not sure if this is something worth taking credit for. The voice is tinny and not attractive; a far cry from the smooth, caressing, silken voices of operators past. Siri is metallic and seems to belong inside an instrument, artificially created and synthesised to sound human ...barely. So if I sounded like that  and if I thought it was my voice that was used I would hush it up.

@LydiaUgucciniStrnad  Any more than two bars and Apple would have to pay royalties to Sony Music Corporation which owns the rights to the song. They paid $29 million for it.
